To take root Among the Stars is a short narrative platformer

Play as Mei Hashimoto, one of the colonists send to an exoplanet to prepare it for the arrival of the rest of humanity.

Explore the colony and its surrounding flora and fauna. Talk to your fellow colonists and send a message to earth via the relay station at the top of the nearby mountain.

To take root Among the Stars was developed by Simon Klein. ( follow on Mastodon )

While they made a variety of different games in the past, this is their first foray into a narrative focused game.

It was developed in the span of about one and a half months using Pico-8, a virtual Fantasy Console by Lexaloffle.

Thanks to the folks on the Pico-8 discord for help fitting the whole game into the limited space, and @Gruber_Music for their excellent introductory music tutorials.

Wonderful little narrative.

Really nice work! Um, are they naked in the hot springs?

I really liked this! Your design in the PICO-8 style is great, and the narrative with its revelation at the end was immersive (sad yet hopeful!) I also loved the easter eggs, "It's dangerous to go alone. Take this!" And, "Five years." What a surprise! Was that number chosen as a nod to Ziggy Stardust?  I'd love to play more. This world has great story potential. Cheers!

glad you liked it! <3 ^-^

The five years, I must admit, was picked out of the blue x)

I'm hoping to do more narrative games in the future. Maybe even in this world, who knows.

If I ever do want to make a longer narrative game though I'll have to either learn more advanced pico 8 techniques or switch engines. I was at the limit with the amount of dialog x)

Great game! Too bad it is so short :)

Congrats on this quality game!

Wow! An amazing platformer adventure.
